Back-to-school season means more than shopping for supplies. It’s also time to make sure your kids are healthy and ready to learn.
Required School Health Items
Immunizations:
Florida law requires students to be up-to-date on vaccinations before attending school. Required vaccines vary by age but typically include:
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
- Polio
- DTaP/Tdap (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella (chickenpox)
If your child isn’t current, get them caught up now. Miami-Dade Health Department offers free or low-cost vaccines at multiple locations.
Physical Exams:
Students participating in school sports need a physical exam from a doctor. Community health centers provide these on a sliding scale.
Vision and Hearing:
Undiagnosed vision and hearing problems affect learning. Many schools offer free screenings, or visit a community health center.
Mental Health Check-Ins
Back-to-school transitions can trigger anxiety and stress, especially for kids who struggled socially or academically last year.
Watch for signs your child might need support:
- Persistent sadness or irritability
- Avoiding school or social activities
- Changes in sleep or appetite
- Difficulty concentrating
- Physical complaints (stomachaches, headaches) with no medical cause
School counselors, pediatricians, and community mental health centers can help.
Free and Reduced Lunch
All Miami-Dade public school students receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of family income.
Backpack and School Supply Assistance
Many organizations distribute free backpacks and supplies in August:
- Chapman Partnership: Annual backpack giveaway
- Urban League of Broward County: School supply distribution
- Local churches and community centers
Call 211 or check Five Health’s Community Connect app for locations near you.
Health Insurance for Kids
If your child doesn’t have health insurance, they likely qualify for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid or Florida KidCare.

Talk About Safety
Before school starts, review:
- Safe routes to/from school
- What to do in emergencies
- Trusted adults to talk to if something feels wrong
- Internet safety and social media boundaries
Healthy, safe kids are ready-to-learn kids.
