Emergency Preparedness: Hurricane Season Health Tips

Hurricane season runs through November. Being prepared protects your health and safety.

Before the Storm

Medications:

  • Refill prescriptions now so you have at least a 7-day supply
  • Keep medications in waterproof containers
  • Have a list of all medications, doses, and prescribing doctors

Medical Equipment:

  • If you use oxygen, dialysis, or other life-sustaining equipment, register with your power company for priority restoration
  • Have backup power sources (batteries, generators)
  • Know where the nearest special-needs shelter is

Health Records:

  • Take photos of insurance cards, prescriptions, and medical records
  • Store copies in waterproof bags or cloud storage

First Aid Kit:

Include: bandages, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, thermometer, tweezers, gloves, hand sanitizer

Food and Water:

  • Store at least 3 days’ worth of non-perishable food
  • One gallon of water per person per day (minimum 3 days)
  • Baby formula, pet food if needed

Know Your Evacuation Zone:

Miami-Dade uses zones A-E. Find yours at miamidade.gov/hurricane. If you’re in an evacuation zone and ordered to leave, go.

During the Storm

  • Stay indoors away from windows
  • Listen to emergency broadcasts
  • Don’t go outside until officials say it’s safe
  • If you lose power, keep refrigerator/freezer doors closed

After the Storm

Carbon Monoxide Danger:

Never use generators, grills, or camp stoves indoors. Carbon monoxide poisoning kills.

Contaminated Water:

Don’t drink tap water until officials say it’s safe. Boil water for 1 minute before drinking if needed.

Food Safety:

Throw out refrigerated food that’s been above 40°F for more than 2 hours.

Mold:

Clean and dry water-damaged areas within 24-48 hours to prevent mold. Wear masks and gloves.

Stress and Mental Health:

Disasters are traumatic. It’s normal to feel anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed afterward. Reach out:

Special Needs and Vulnerable Populations

If you or a family member:

  • Requires special medical equipment
  • Has mobility challenges
  • Is elderly and living alone
  • Has mental health or cognitive disabilities

Register for the Miami-Dade County Special Needs Registry at 311 or miamidade.gov. This ensures emergency responders know you may need extra help.
